Gold Line

Great progress continues on the Foothill Extension light rail project from Pasadena to Azusa; which is on schedule to be turned over to Metro in September 2015 for testing and pre-revenue service (Metro will determine when passenger service begins). Nowhere is construction progress more visible than in the City of Azusa, where construction is happening all along the rail corridor.  Here are a few highlights:

Three of the six street-level, or at-grade, crossings are now complete and streets re-opened: Azusa Avenue, Pasadena Avenue and Dalton Avenue. Work is still underway at San Gabriel Avenue, and will continue through November 2013.  Underground utility work at Virginia Avenue was recently completed and the street is temporarily reopened. Early next year, Virginia Avenue will need to close again for grade crossing improvements. Finally, Alameda Avenue permanently closed in August for the construction of the future Azusa-Downtown Station.

In addition, a significant amount of bridge construction is also underway in Azusa. The freight bridge structures over Citrus Avenue and Palm Drive were recently completed, when the existing freight tracks were moved from their previous position to their new alignment. The two new light rail bridges over these streets will be completed in the future. The Foothill Boulevard bridges are also in process. In early October 2013, the bridge abutments (outer support) for the new bridges over Foothill Boulevard will be complete, and the outer lanes on Foothill Boulevard will reopen. At that time, the inner lanes will close to construct the center pier (support).
