Skunks are common in foothill communities.

They are attracted to:
  • Pet food (especially cat food)
  • Unattended garbage
  • Certain insects and grubs found commonly in lawns
  • Open house vents
  • Open garage doors

Since skunks are a rabies vector, you should avoid them. Skunks are usually nocturnal, so if you see a skunk that is obviously sick or appearing uncoordinated during daytime, you should report it to the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care & Control at (626) 962-3577 immediately.

Skunks have very poor eyesight, but they will give you a warning by stamping their front feet before they spray, giving you time to back away.
