Basic Literacy

Over 10 million adults in California function at or below basic literacy levels. They may not have the skills required to be gainfully employed or economically self-sufficient. They are unlikely to have the skills, and the confidence, to engage in their children’s education or participate in community activities. Yet once they start to learn, there is no stopping them . . . and you can help them get started!

Share the rewards of reading!

Volunteer to tutor an English-speaking adult who would like to improve his or her reading and writing skills. We’ll teach you how.

Step 1. Contact us at (626) 812-5266 or

Step 2. Come in for an interview. This will give us a chance to learn more about you and what you hope to get from the program, and for you to learn more about us.

Step 3. Attend a tutor training workshop. We will introduce you to materials and strategies to work successfully one-on-one with an adult. Please call 626-812-5266 or email  to find out when the next training is scheduled.

Step 4. Let the tutoring begin! We will match you with an adult learner who is available when you are. You will meet once or twice a week for about 1 ½ hours at the library.
